Things to do in San Diego with Kids!

As a homeschooling mom, I'm always on the lookout for exciting and educational experiences for my kids. Our recent trip to San Diego, California, turned out to be a fantastic mix of both. We stayed in a lovely VRBO in Encinitas (just north of San Diego), which served as our home base for a memorable two week long adventure.

The city of San Diego does this amazing promotion each October. All October long, kids eat, stay, and play for free, while parents enjoy great deals and big-time savings on many San Diego attractions, museums, meals and more. We took full advantage of this amazing opportunity. Here's a glimpse into our journey through this beautiful coastal city.

Encinitas: Our Charming Home Away from Home

We chose Encinitas as our lodging destination, and it couldn't have been more perfect. Our VRBO rental was not only comfortable but also conveniently located. Encinitas, with its laid-back vibes, stunning beaches, and vibrant downtown area, quickly won our hearts. I loved this location and would definitely choose to lodge there again and again.

San Diego Zoo: A Wild Learning Experience

We revisited the world-renowned San Diego Zoo. It was a day filled with awe and wonder as we explored the diverse animal exhibits. The kids couldn't contain their excitement, and the educational opportunities were endless. We learned about animals from all over the globe, from giant pandas to exotic birds.

Birch Aquarium: An Underwater Adventure

Next on our list was the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This fascinating spot allowed us to dive into the wonders of the underwater world. The kids were captivated by colorful fish, mesmerizing seahorses, and even the touch pools where they could interact with sea creatures.

San Juan Capistrano Mission: A Step Back in Time

San Juan Capistrano MissionA short drive away, we stepped back in time at the San Juan Capistrano Mission. This historical gem provided a glimpse into California's rich history. It was a great opportunity for the kids to learn about the state's past, explore the beautiful gardens, and marvel at the iconic swallows.

Legoland: Building Memories Brick by Brick

Legoland

One of the highlights of our trip was our visit to Legoland. The kids' eyes lit up as we entered this magical world of creativity and imagination. From thrilling rides to intricate Lego displays, Legoland offered an incredible educational experience. We marveled at the impressive Miniland USA, where famous landmarks were recreated in intricate detail using Lego bricks. It was a day filled with laughter, adventure, and, of course, plenty of Lego building.

Beach Days: South Ponto, Moonlight, and La Jolla Shores

Moonlight State Beach Encinitas

No trip to San Diego is complete without some beach time. We spent sun-soaked days at South Ponto Beach and Moonlight Beach, building sandcastles, playing in the waves, and soaking in the California sunshine.

Our visit to La Jolla Shores Beach, however, had a unique twist. While enjoying a seaside picnic, a daring flock of seagulls decided to launch a surprise attack on our lunch. They swooped down and, in the blink of an eye, devoured all of our fries. While we were left with empty containers and bewildered expressions, it became a hilarious memory that we'll cherish for years to come.

Our homeschooling journey took an exciting turn in San Diego, where learning and adventure went hand in hand. From the animal kingdom to historical missions, serene beaches, the imaginative world of Legoland, and the mischievous seagulls of La Jolla Shores, this trip had it all. We returned home with unforgettable memories and a newfound appreciation for the incredible educational opportunities that San Diego offers to families like ours.

San Diego, you stole our hearts, and we can't wait to return for more homeschooling adventures in the future!
